Helena Waldmann: Good Passports Bad Passports. A border experience

(Berlin/Germany)

We do not want to be limited by borders. We want to overcome boundaries and learn new things. But we want to explore these new things without being troubled by strangeness, by foreignness. Using the old theatrical tool of teichoscopy – someone tells us about what he sees beyond a wall and we have to believe him – the dance director Helena Waldmann once again confronts concepts of the familiar and the foreign, “us” and “the others”, from the same global perspective with which she has already interrogated our Eurocentric world view in works such as “Letters from Tentland” and “Made in Bangladesh”. In her new production, which will premiere in March 2017, Waldmann searches for the missing images from the other side, and explores the borders between “us” and “them” as well as our attempts to overcome them – internally or externally, from one side or the other.

“Helena Waldmann’s work is a godsend for the theatre.”
