Hillel Kogan: We Love Arabs

(Tel Aviv/Israel)

A jewish Israeli choreographer invites an Arab Israeli dancer to collaborate on a dance performance about peaceful coexistence. A great idea, but the two of them are entering dangerous terrain – for their art reflects the political reality of the Middle East to a far greater degree than they realize. Banal instructions by the choreographer explode like landmines, the conciliatory dialogue slips into ambiguity, and good intentions become hopelessly unmanageable. In a work that is politically incorrect and pitilessly funny, controversial and intelligent while also choreographically sophisticated, Hillel Kogan skewers the prejudices between the Star of David and the Crescent Moon, taking cynical delight in his exploration of the power struggle between choreographer and dancer. Is the do-gooder really permitted to call the shots? Since its premiere in 2013 “We Love Arabs” has been performed to enthusiastic audiences from Paris to New York. Now COLOURS brings this highlight of Israeli dance to Stuttgart.
